Kayla Rees, LMHC
Psychotherapist
(she/her)
I identify as white, cis-female, able-bodied, and queer.
My lifelong passion has been in understanding the parts of ourselves that are forced to go numb out of a need for survival. Our innate sense of aliveness becomes clouded for reasons beyond our control: because of trauma, because of the endless ‘should’s our culture demands of us, because of the white supremacist, heteronormative, ableist society we all live in. This numbness can feel like fogginess, overwhelm, anxiety, or depression, and for many people, it’s present on a daily basis. Whatever the reason(s) the numbness exists for you, it is my emphatic hope that in exploring the story of your life together, we can begin to thaw the frozen landscape and uncover the real needs, wants, and desires that exist within you.
In my work, I lean strongly on psychodynamic therapy (the theory that patterns from your past still impact your present), mindfulness therapy (the practice of slowing down and being present to the truth of any given moment), and somatic practices (exploring the mind-body connection by releasing emotion through the body). I weave in other modalities as well, such as Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, Strengths-based Therapy, and Relational Therapy.
I have received extensive training as a sex therapist from the Northwest Institute on Intimacy, as well as advanced Perinatal Mental Health training from Perinatal Support International, and am currently enrolled in the yearlong Body Trust training from The Center for Body Trust.
Work as a therapist is a deeply personal endeavor for me, one that has touched my life personally and professionally in profound ways. I am committed to continuing my own growth through professional trainings and ongoing work in understanding the ways my identity and privilege impact the world around me.
